NIHONTO KENKYUKAI

The NIHONTO KENKYUKAI of the Czech-Japanese Association began its activities in 1996 with the goal of creating conditions for enhancing communication between those interested in the art and technique of the Japanese sword. Its main objective is to build a communication channel to help provide quality information about the Japanese sword to members of the association and to the public at large. The members have drawn up a list of the Nihonto Kenkyukai objectives:

  • improve knowledge on the nature and preservation of the Japanese swords in our collection,
  • encourage study of Japanese swords not only from the technological and artistic points of view, but also to see them in the broader context of Japanese culture and philosophy,
  • deepen contact with world's leading authorities in the field, especially with those in Japan,
  • create conditions for the acquisition of practical knowledge by producing replicas at home and abroad,
  • build a basic fund of expert literature about Japanese sword, arms and armour for study and research purposes,
  • spread knowledge among other interested people by way of lectures and publications,
  • develop contact with the state collections of Japanese weaponry in the Czech Republic,
  • help to cultivate antiquarianism of Japanese swords and armour in the Czech Republic by the way of consultancy and documentation,
  • build the national CZ Swords Register as a safe and independent tool to prevent criminality around Japanese swords and armour.
