26.5.-16.7.2018 The 25th Newly designated Special Important Swords and Fittings Exhibition.
The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords is a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation that has carried out sword appraisals since 1948, with the object of studying and preserving Japanese swords. Under the current system of appraisal, swords, mounts and fittings are divided into four ranks: Hozon-token, Tokubetsu-Hozon-token, Juyo-token and Tokubetsu-Juyo-token (special important sword). Tokubetsu-Juyo appraisals were started in 1971 and have been held once every few years down to the present day; it is the highest rank that can be awarded by the society authorities and is therefore particularly meaningful. Swords, mounts and fittings, which are of outstanding quality and representative of their period or school, are carefully selected from those that have received a Juyo rank at the annual appraisal, and the very superb gems are able to receive this classification.
We hope you enjoy these works, the beauty of the steel of the blades, and the elegance of the mounts or fittings represented as a true cultural heritage, embodying the richly refined aesthetics of the Japanese peoplessification.
